For the Port of Amsterdam, Barnebies, in collaboration with Circle Economy and Ecofys, explored suitable technologies to reuse waste streams in the Amsterdam port area, thereby reducing CO₂ impact.
We provided order-of-magnitude estimates for the global reduction of CO₂-equivalents achievable through innovations in the Port of Amsterdam, based on public literature and prior research. The estimates were made for innovations that will utilize infrastructure for CO₂ (as a resource) and/or H₂ (as a resource, heat source, or for electricity) to design industrial processes in a circular way. Our research included:
- Gasification and fermentation of biomass
- Production of aromatics from waste streams
- Extraction of fibers from biomass for biocomposite production
- Production of synthetic kerosene based on H₂ and CO₂
- Production of chemicals using algae
The results are being used for the development of the port’s future strategy.
